The Audials API enables producers of entertainment solutions to expand their range of offers with minimum effort

Use the Audials API on any platform

Audials AG is a producer of highly successful and internationally acclaimed entertainment applications. The fact that Audials applications run on all platform types has played a part in this success. Starting with traditional Windows PCs and spanning across Android and iOS to purely web-based browser applications, every popular platform is catered for. The Audials application has even been integrated into Bosch’s mySPIN car infotainment system.

Other platforms currently in the planning stages include home assistants, additional car infotainment systems and smart TVs. In order to realize this diversity of applications and platforms efficiently, Audials has developed the so-called Audials API, which enables easy and convenient access to content. This means that the applications themselves only have to deal with presenting the content in a way that is optimally suited to their platforms.

It’s all about the data – What Audials has to offer

What is particularly impressive about the Audials API is its unique data. The easy-to-use and well-structured JSON-based API enables access to an abundance of data. The way in which this diversity of data is cleverly interlinked often opens up completely new possibilities and fields of application for systems using the Audials API. Below, some of the most important aspects of this data are presented.

The world’s largest radio database with over 100,000 online radio stations

Audials boasts the world’s best and largest database, consisting of over 100,000 radio stations from every country around the globe. Each radio station is enhanced with a list of existing mirrors as well as information on available streaming quality settings and formats (mp3, WMA or AAC). What’s more, stations are precisely categorized by their location and genres, with Audials currently using over 100 genres to categorize data.

With radio stations constantly being added and deleted, it is vital that the database is kept up to date. Audials ensures that this is the case by using efficient web spiders to scan the internet for new stations. Furthermore, existing mirrors are monitored in real time, ensuring that outages are detected as soon as possible and affected stations can be updated manually if necessary.

Real-time and history information

Thanks to its sophisticated monitoring algorithm, Audials is the only software able to display what is being played on over 50,000 stations in real time without the user even having to listen to the station. Within a fraction of a second, it tracks and displays when a song ends and the next one starts. Thanks to a database of over 60 million tracks, this is even possible for stations that don’t release so-called meta-information about their streams.

This alone makes it possible to also search the database in real time for stations that are currently playing or happen to often play a specific artist.

What’s more, Audials is not only capable of displaying real-time information, but also provides the track history of over 50,000 stations from over the past months – accurate to the second.

Metadata and classifications

Audials enhances data received from broadcasters with additional information such as cover images for music tracks, album artwork and much more. Thanks to the enormous Audials discography database with over 1.5 million artists, 1.2 million albums and over 13 million tracks, it is possible to precisely allocate the (often inaccurate) metatags provided by the stations to an existing track by a specific artist.

On top of this, additional classifications can be added. The classifications currently supported by the Audials API include an artist’s radio popularity, genre-specific hit lists and a list of tracks receiving the most airplay on the radio. Additional classifications can simply be added.

Not just radio: YouTube, Podcasts and more

Audials has even more to offer with an index of countless millions of the most important music files made accessible by popular music portals YouTube, Vimeo, Veoh etc. Each track is classified according to various criteria such as studio version, live version or cover version.

Furthermore, Audials boasts an extensive podcast catalog. With over 155,000 podcasts from around the world, the text search function enables you to browse through 1.2 million episodes which can then be played via a direct link.

Interesting for the German market in particular is the TV catalog which boasts an index of TV content for all the largest German-speaking channels, providing that the corresponding channel still exists.

It goes without saying that users of Audials services can create and adjust their accounts with customized settings. Settings such as radio favorites, previously listened to radio stations, podcast subscriptions etc. are synchronized on all devices used to access the services, meaning they can be accessed whenever.

Using the API: ready-to-use features

Our API grants its users access to an abundance of optimally prepared data. Thanks to the well-structured interfaces, it is possible to integrate the API’s features into your own systems using just a few lines of code. The way the API is designed means that integration is flexible and can be carried out according to the specific requirements of the system.

The API boasts both a small single-column navigation menu, designed specifically for smaller, mobile screens, as well as a double-column navigation menu for larger screens. What’s more, it offers an efficient, customized dashboard and lets users create their own lists such as previously listened to radio stations, unwanted stations, popular categories and radio favorites.

Reference implementations and support services

A large number of reference implementations for using the Audials API already exist. Clients have already been implemented in C# for Windows PCs, in Objective-C for iOS, in Java for Android and even in JavaScript for pure web applications.

Based on the existing implementations, it is easy to come up with tailored white label solutions. Another option is to establish completely new applications and integrate the code into them as a framework for API access.

Despite the wide range of features that the Audials API has to offer, our team of specialized software developers is always willing to develop customized enhancements for specific requirements.

Cluster server

The Audials API operates on a scalable cluster server so that the overall system continues to run unhindered in the event of a single server outage. Another advantage is that server capacity can be easily expanded if demand increases. In addition to this, server nodes can be distributed geographically.
